Campers’ Christmas is a tradition dear to Quebecers. Christmas decorations, Santa Claus, traditional turkey meal… this joyful and friendly holiday is celebrated only in Quebec!
Did you know that Campers’ Christmas has officially started at Domaine International de Rouville? Here is the little history of this tradition, an overview of the festivities and the ways to celebrate this summer in Rouville.
- Origin
Previously, it was difficult for large Quebec families to gather in winter to celebrate Christmas, mainly because of the difficult weather conditions and the lack of space to accommodate all these beautiful people.
This is how the idea of celebrating Christmas outdoors in the summer came, and the campsite became the ideal place to get together! Offering plenty of space and being accessible to all, the Campers' Christmas was born.
The first official Campers' Christmas was organized by the owners of Domaine International de Rouville in 1962. Since then, this celebration has charmed all Quebecers with its festive and unifying aspect, and is even celebrated as far away as Florida!
- Festivities
Campers' Christmas is celebrated around July 25, usually on a Saturday. A week in advance, campers decorate their trailers and grounds with garlands, trees, inflatable men… and even artificial snow!
The same day, the festivities continue with activities, entertainment, and of course, a visit from Santa Claus. Warmly dressed for summer, he walks around the campsite to greet the children. To end the day, everyone comes together to prepare and share a traditional Christmas meal with the family.
- How do we celebrate at Domaine International de Rouville?
Santa Claus, floats, music, nothing is too good for campers' Christmas in Rouville! We are proud to say that our Campers’ Christmas is the most popular in Quebec. In fact, our traditional colorful parade attracts an average of 15,000 people!
In the days leading up to the parade, campers work on making their costumes and floats. An atmosphere of madness and creativity reigns on the campsite!
Everyone pitches in and is committed to the success of the event. To motivate participants, a prize is awarded to the most original float. Preparing for campers' Christmas strengthens bonds and allows them to meet new people. Long live the community spirit!
In conclusion, few holidays are as unifying and Quebecois as Campers' Christmas. Like poutine, this tradition is a timeless classic from home!
